Tell us about the mold

No obligation. Independent local companies reply to you directly.

What happens next

  1. Your request is passed along

It goes to independent mold companies that work in your town. Someone may call or text if a key detail is missing, such as your ZIP code or a rough size.

  2. Companies contact you

They may ask questions, ask for photos or set a time to look. Describe your situation any time; companies reply on their own schedules, and replies can be slower after a named storm.

  3. You compare and decide

Ask each company for an itemized written estimate and its DBPR license number. Quotes are free, and you are not obligated to hire anyone.

What helps companies quote accurately

A few details save a lot of back and forth. You don't need all of them, and rough is fine.

  • Where it is. A bathroom ceiling, a closet, behind a baseboard, the attic, around the air handler, or a wall that got wet. Include your town or ZIP code.
  • Roughly how big. A dinner plate, a 3 by 3 foot patch, one wall, a whole room. Companies will measure. Florida's mold-licensing law covers mold growth over 10 square feet (s. 468.8411), so size matters.
  • The water source, if you know it. A roof leak, a plumbing leak, an AC condensate line, flooding after heavy rain, or storm surge.
  • When it got wet. Days ago, weeks ago, or not sure. The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours, so timing helps a company plan.
  • Own, condo or rent. Condo owners should tell the association in writing. Renters should give the landlord written notice and keep a copy.
  • A seasonal home? Say if the home was closed up for months and how the AC was set while you were away.
  • Photos later. Companies may ask for photos. Take pictures and video now, before anything is moved, cleaned or torn out, and note the date.

Before you sign anything. Florida licenses mold assessors and mold remediators through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Look up the company's license at myfloridalicense.com (search by name or license number). Ask for a written contract and proof of insurance. In Florida, a company that does the mold assessment generally can't also do the remediation on the same structure within 12 months, and vice versa (s. 468.8419).
