Finding mold is unsettling. Maybe it showed up after a storm, a slow roof leak or an AC drain that backed up. Maybe you came back to a closed-up condo after the summer and noticed a musty smell at the door. The next step is usually a round of phone calls, repeating the same story to company after company.

What this service is not
- Not a mold company. Sarasota Mold Experts does not inspect, test, remove or remediate mold, and it does not rebuild anything. It has no crews and no technicians. The name is just a name; the site itself holds no license or certification.

Who replies to a request
Requests go to independent local businesses. Depending on what you describe, that may be a mold remediation company, a mold assessment (testing) company, or one of each. They are separate companies for a reason. In Florida, a company that does the mold assessment generally can't also do the remediation on the same structure within 12 months, and vice versa (s. 468.8419). If you want an independent assessment before work, or a clearance test after it, plan on a different company from the one doing the removal.
Some contractors are exempt from the mold license when working within their own license (s. 468.841), so ask which license covers the work. Florida's mold-licensing law covers mold growth over 10 square feet (s. 468.8411). For smaller areas, EPA says you can usually clean it yourself. Homeowners may also work on their own home (s. 468.841).
Before you hire anyone, ask for:
- The company's DBPR license number, and look it up yourself.
- A written contract (s. 468.8422).
- Proof of insurance. Florida law requires a mold remediator to carry at least $1,000,000 in general liability coverage (s. 468.8421).
- A written assessment or remediation plan that says what will be removed, cleaned and dried.
- A clearance test by an independent assessor, if you want one.
